Birthday Cake Frosting

I have made more frostings then I can even count. This one is my all time favorite! I’ve had it every year on my birthday for at least 15 years. It doesn’t have an overwhelming citrus flavor just an undertone.
What you need:
2 clean navel oranges (make sure the skin is unscarred because we are going to use the zest)
1/2 cup butter
1/2 unflavored shortening or lard
3 cups powdered sugar
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 tbsp buttermilk
Food coloring if you choose
Directions:
Cream together the shortening and butter. Zest both oranges into the bowl. I zest until I have about 1 tbsp. Cut oranges and squeeze juice into the bowl. Add the vanilla and mix. Start adding in the powdered sugar one cup at a time. If you are using food coloring you can alternate milk and sugar until you have the color you want. If you are not using food coloring just add 2 1/2 cups of sugar and skip the milk.
My new favorite piping tip is the jumbo star tip. Makes decorating soooo easy!
